During this semester we discussed many different forms of art and different artists. One of the projects we did had to do with postmodern principles such as text in art, appropriation, or juxtaposition. I chose to do appropriation which is when you take another artist's work and change it in such a way to make it your own. The artist I stole from was Banksy. Banksy inspires me because he or she has such an amazing talent in communicating a message. All of his/her works are always kind of out there but the street art is really unique and clever. I took Banksy's heart balloon street art and made it my own for that project.
Researching Banksy and all his/her art made me realize that I can communicate through art as well. Another project we did was based off of an essential question. We had to come up with a question that could be answered through art. For me, I really grew as an artist during this project because I had to go deeper and find a way to pull at someone's heart when they look at my work. I couldn't make just another piece of art to hang on a wall in a room. So with much thought I came up with the question: what hurts you the most? For me the answer to that question is words. Insulting and mean comments that upset people. The background of my painting is typed up definitions of hurtful words on paper and then I painted a silhouette of a person catching their tears.
This semester I grew as an artist with the ways I communicate art and in ways that I expanded my thinking. For a few of the project I encountered difficulties when trying to find inspiration but eventually I overcame them. Art isn't always an easy process but in the end everything that you create will be appreciated. This semester was really fun and I really enjoyed taking this class!
